Sana Yousaf Murder Case: Prime Accused Retracts Confession, Claims Police Framed Him

5/18/2026, 11:00:00 PM

The prime accused in the murder case of 17-year-old TikTok influencer Sana Yousaf withdrew his earlier confessional statement during a court hearing on Monday, claiming that Islamabad police falsely implicated him in the case. Umar Hayat, who had previously confessed under Section 164 of the CrPC to killing Sana, denied all allegations while recording his statement under Section 342 before the trial court. During the hearing, Hayat repeatedly refused to answer questions until his lawyer arrived. Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka questioned him about allegedly renting a vehicle, travelling to Islamabad, entering Sana’s house in G-13, shooting her and fleeing with her mobile phone, but the accused initially declined to respond without legal counsel. After his lawyer appeared, Hayat claimed he had no connection to the murder and alleged that police fabricated evidence against him due to public pressure on social media. He denied renting any vehicle, travelling to Islamabad on June 2, or visiting Sana’s residence. The accused also claimed there was no CCTV footage, location data or other evidence placing him at the crime scene. He rejected ownership of the alleged murder weapon and described the case as a “blind murder”. Hayat further alleged that police tortured him in custody, forced him to sign blank papers and pressured him into confessing. He also refused to acknowledge the confessional statement recorded before a magistrate, claiming it was not voluntary and that he was unaware of its contents. The court proceedings also saw tension between the judge and defence counsel after a video was allegedly recorded inside the courtroom. Judge Majoka ordered the footage to be deleted and warned against its circulation online. Sana Yousaf, a 17-year-old TikTok personality with over a million followers, was killed in June 2025. Her murder sparked nationwide outrage and renewed debate over women’s safety in Pakistan. Earlier, Hayat had confessed to travelling from Jaranwala to Islamabad, forcing entry into Sana’s house and shooting her after developing a one-sided obsession with her. At the time, he claimed the confession was made voluntarily and expressed remorse over the crime.

Rawalpindi Turns Into Drug Hub as Ice & Other Drugs Sold Openly

Rawalpindi Turns Into Drug Hub as Ice & Other Drugs Sold Openly Rawalpindi is witnessing a disturbing rise in open drug dealing, particularly in the areas falling under Ratta Amral, Ganj Mandi and Pirwadhai police stations, where residents claim that dangerous narcotics including ICE are being sold openly without fear or restriction. According to local residents and social circles, drug addicts can be seen using narcotics publicly while the younger generation is rapidly falling into addiction. Citizens allege that despite repeated complaints and growing concern, no effective crackdown has been launched raising serious questions over law enforcement performance in these areas. Public circles have strongly criticized the alleged silence and inaction of the police, stating that the unchecked spread of drugs is pushing Rawalpindi’s youth toward destruction, crime and social collapse. Citizens have appealed to senior authorities, including Punjab Police high command and the provincial government to take immediate notice and launch strict operations against drug networks operating in the city. Residents further demanded accountability from concerned police stations and called for a city wide anti-narcotics operation to protect the future of the youth before the situation worsens further.

According to an official notice issued on Monday, unauthorised occupants have been given a strict three-day deadline to leave. The directive applies not only to hostel rooms but also to shared spaces such as common rooms, mess facilities, and study areas. The administration has warned that disciplinary action will be taken against registered hostel residents found facilitating or allowing illegal occupants to stay within the hostels. Classes Resume on Campus In a separate announcement, QAU confirmed that on-campus academic activities have resumed from April 27. The university had temporarily shifted to online classes starting April 20 due to security concerns and traffic disruptions in Islamabad. Students and faculty members have been instructed to comply with all existing safety measures to ensure the smooth continuation of academic operations. Administrative Challenges Continue Meanwhile, the university has been facing administrative difficulties due to a delay of over two months in appointing a new Vice Chancellor. Rawalpindi’s Ring Road to open without Thalian interchange

Rawalpindi’s Ring Road to open without Thalian interchange

RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi Ring Road project is approaching completion, with authorities targeting its opening by the end of May. However, the provincial government has decided to postpone construction of the Rs5 billion Thalian interchange on the motorway and instead make the road operational through a temporary two-way carriageway system. According to a senior official of the divisional administration, the project has entered its final phase. The main corridor has largely taken shape, while landscaping and horticulture work has also begun along the route. He added that widening work is currently underway at the Thalian junction, where the Ring Road connects with the motorway, as it is expected to handle more than 18,000 vehicles entering the highway daily. Officials say expansion is necessary to prevent traffic congestion and long queues. Deputy Project Director Ashfaq Sulheri told Dawn that the Thalian interchange will not be constructed immediately. Instead, a two-way carriageway will be used temporarily to ensure smooth traffic flow onto the motorway once the Ring Road becomes operational. He said certain technical and logistical issues led to the decision to defer the interchange, which will now be taken up after the completion of the main project. The National Highway Authority (NHA) is also expanding the service road network to accommodate increasing traffic pressure. Sulheri added that a revised PC-I including the Thalian interchange has already been submitted by the Project Management Unit, but priority has been given to making the road functional first. Regarding construction progress, he said the Punjab government has directed acceleration of work to meet the pre-monsoon deadline. Work is now being carried out in three shifts. He further stated that major structures are nearing completion, including the Soan Bridge, while girder casting for the railway bridge is underway. Asphalt work has also started, with over 28 kilometres of the 38.3-kilometre road already completed. Work on interchanges, bridges, and road surfacing is being executed simultaneously to recover delays caused during the monsoon season, with officials aiming to fully stabilize progress by October–November. The Ring Road project includes five interchanges at Banth, Chak Baili Khan, Adiala Road, Chakri Road, and Thalian, along with an industrial zone planned along the corridor. Originally estimated at Rs33 billion, the project cost has now escalated to Rs47 billion. Officials indicated that any further cost adjustments will be reviewed upon project completion.
