The United States says Iran’s national team will be allowed to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but individuals linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) will not be permitted to enter the country.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that there are no restrictions on Iranian players themselves, emphasizing that athletes should not be affected. Donald Trump echoed this stance, stating his administration does not want to interfere with sports.

However, Rubio stressed that people with ties to the IRGC—designated by the U.S. as a terrorist organization—would be barred, even if they attempt to enter under roles such as journalists or team staff.

The 2026 World Cup will kick off on June 11 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Despite earlier tensions and Iran’s request to move its matches خارج the U.S., there is currently no indication that Iran will be banned or withdraw from the tournament.
