Pakistan Navy Welcomes First Hangor-Class Submarine at Karachi Port
Karachi: The first Hangor-class submarine has arrived at Karachi Port, marking a major step forward in the Pakistan Navy’s modernisation efforts and highlighting the growing defence partnership between Pakistan and China.
According to a statement issued by the Pakistan Navy on Thursday, the advanced submarine is equipped with modern combat systems, sophisticated sensors, Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, and enhanced stealth capabilities. These features are expected to significantly strengthen the navy’s operational and combat effectiveness.
The submarine received a traditional naval welcome upon its arrival. The ceremony was attended by Pakistan Navy officers, personnel, and family members of the crew. Cadets from the Pakistan Naval Academy presented a ceremonial salute, while Pakistan Navy Z9EC helicopters conducted a fly-past to honor the occasion.
A reception ceremony was later held at the Pakistan Navy Dockyard, where Commander Pakistan Fleet Vice Admiral Abdul Munib attended as the chief guest.
The name Hangor carries special significance in Pakistan’s naval history. During the 1971 Pakistan-India war, the original PNS Hangor became the first submarine since World War II to sink an enemy warship when it successfully torpedoed the Indian frigate INS Khukri.
The Pakistan Navy plans to induct a total of eight Hangor-class submarines into its fleet. The first submarine of the class was launched in April 2024, while the second, third, and fourth submarines were launched during 2025 as part of the ongoing programme.
The arrival of the first Hangor-class submarine is being seen as a significant boost to Pakistan’s maritime defence capabilities and a key milestone in the navy’s long-term fleet modernisation strategy.
