ECB Investigation Forces Stokes Out of England Test Squad

Ben Stokes Dropped for Second New Zealand Test Amid ECB Investigation

LONDON: England captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have been left out of the squad for next week's second Test against New Zealand at The Oval as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) continues its investigation into an alleged breach of team discipline.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the ECB confirmed that both players would not be available for selection while inquiries into the incident remain ongoing. The second Test of the series is scheduled to begin on June 17 at The Oval in London.

As a result of Stokes' absence, former England captain Joe Root has been appointed interim captain for the crucial fixture. Root, one of England's most experienced and successful Test cricketers, will lead the side as they seek to build on their victory in the opening match of the series.

"The England & Wales Cricket Board can confirm that, given the ongoing investigation, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have not been made available for selection for the Rothesay second Test against New Zealand," the ECB said in a statement.

The board also announced the inclusion of Sussex fast bowler Jofra Archer and Essex batter Jordan Cox in the squad as replacements.

The disciplinary issue stems from events that allegedly took place following England's 115-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's. Reports suggest that Stokes and Atkinson breached a team-imposed midnight curfew and were involved in an incident at a London nightclub during the early hours of Monday morning.

The ECB launched a formal investigation after reports emerged linking Stokes to a confrontation involving Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa. According to British media reports, a physical altercation is believed to have occurred, during which a member of the ECB's security team was reportedly struck.

While details of the incident remain under investigation, the controversy has once again raised questions about discipline within the England camp. The team has previously faced criticism over player behavior, particularly during the Ashes tour of Australia, where allegations of an unhealthy drinking culture emerged following England's 4-1 series defeat.

Interestingly, England management chose not to hand the captaincy to vice-captain Harry Brook. Instead, selectors opted for the experienced Joe Root to lead the side. Brook himself was involved in a disciplinary matter last year when he was fined and formally reprimanded for late-night drinking and an altercation with a nightclub bouncer in New Zealand. That incident ultimately led to the introduction of the team's midnight curfew policy.

The absence of Stokes and Atkinson represents a significant setback for England ahead of the second Test. Stokes remains one of the team's most influential players both as captain and all-rounder, while Atkinson has become a key member of England's bowling attack.

With Root taking charge and new faces joining the squad, all eyes will now be on England's response as they prepare for an important encounter against New Zealand while the ECB investigation continues.
