Heroic Hospital Staff Member Injured While Saving Doctor in Quetta Acid Attack
Balochistan CM Announces Civil Award for Hero Who Saved Doctor During Acid Attack
A hospital employee who courageously intervened to save a female doctor during a brutal acid attack at Civil Hospital Quetta will be honored with a civil award, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti announced on Sunday.
The chief minister made the announcement through a statement on social media, praising Abdul Razzaq Tarakai for displaying exceptional bravery and humanity during the incident. Tarakai reportedly rushed to assist Dr. Mahnoor Nisar moments after she was attacked with acid inside the hospital premises, suffering burn injuries himself while attempting to protect the doctor.
The acid attack took place on Saturday and sent shockwaves across Balochistan’s medical community. According to hospital and police officials, Dr. Mahnoor Nisar sustained burns to her face, abdomen, legs, and right hand. She was initially taken to a private medical facility in Quetta before being airlifted to Karachi for advanced treatment and specialized medical care.
Medical sources stated that reconstructive surgeons and eye specialists conducted a detailed assessment of the victim after her arrival in Karachi. Doctors confirmed that approximately 13 percent of her body suffered burn injuries. Although her eyes were affected by the acid, medical examinations found that her eyesight remains intact. Officials added that she is currently in stable condition and receiving treatment in a Special Care Unit.
Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities reported that the suspected attacker was killed during a police encounter shortly after the incident. Investigators are continuing efforts to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack, including the motive behind the assault.
Commending Tarakai’s actions, Chief Minister Bugti described him as a valuable asset to society and a symbol of selfless service. He said individuals who put themselves at risk to save others represent the highest ideals of courage and humanity.
“A civil award will be conferred upon Abdul Razzaq Tarakai, an employee of Civil Hospital Quetta, who displayed extraordinary courage, humanity, and dedication to duty by providing immediate assistance during the tragic acid attack on Dr. Mahnoor Nisar,” the chief minister stated.
Earlier, Bugti personally spoke with Tarakai over the phone and praised his bravery. During the conversation, the chief minister acknowledged that the hospital worker had acted without concern for his own safety while attempting to rescue the victim.
“You served humanity without caring for your own life,” Bugti told him, according to official sources.
The chief minister also assured Tarakai that the provincial government would cover all expenses related to his treatment. He further pledged that if necessary, arrangements would be made for treatment at some of Pakistan’s most advanced medical facilities.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from medical professionals, civil society organizations, and members of the public. Healthcare workers have called for stronger security measures at hospitals and stricter action against violence targeting medical staff.
The Balochistan government has reiterated its commitment to supporting individuals who demonstrate extraordinary courage in the service of humanity and protecting healthcare professionals working across the province.
